How to Fall in Love with Yourself

I was inspired to write this post after replying to a post by Bek C that posed the question: Would you marry you?? What an inspiring question. It got me thinking about womanhood, in general.

I've been having a crisis of womanhood during this whole TTC/infertility process. This kind of thing really makes you question what being a woman means. I think once you hit your 30s you start to grow into your womanhood a bit more. You're not that cute college girl anymore, naive about the world around you. You've had your share (and maybe more) of heartache, you look around you and realize that you aren't doing what you thought you'd be doing and maybe you're OK with that, you're noticing that your friends are making babies and you wanna make some too.

When I hit my 30s I had a bit of an epiphany. I realized I didn't know how to be with myself. I mean really just be with myself. I hated the silence. I hated the thoughts that ran through my head, unbidden and unwelcome like those mean girls you knew in high school. They whispered behind my back that I would fail before I even began, that I was boring and no fun to be around.

Right after we lost Little P I did a Pinterest search for womanhood. I wanted to see what that actually looked like because I sure as hell didn't know. I saw pictures of women in strong poses, staring defiantly into the camera with arms linked. I didn't have any off-line friends in this journey willing to link arms with me so that I could be strong, so that didn't work. I saw pictures of women in sexy poses, pursing red-lipstick lips. Nope, didn't identify with that either. I saw women smiling confidently, caught mid-laugh  atop a mountain or getting ready to dive off of a cliff. Ready for adventure.

There! There's the woman I used to be. What happened to her??

I'm on a quest to fall in love with myself. I've been on this quest before infertility reared its ugly head but I feel like there's a new urgency that hasn't been there before.I asked myself, when was the last time you felt strong and confident? It was back in college during an African dance class. I couldn't believe I was getting a grade for doing something so awesome. I relished it. Walking into class barefoot to the beat of the drum. Feeling the polished wood under my feet. My lappa skirt (that you were required to make yourself!) cinched tight around my waist.

Twisting, turning, thrusting, leaping in time to the music. I felt like I could breathe for the first time.

The rush was amazing. I didn't mind the blisters on the soles of my feet, nor the sweat dripping down my face. We were women, all shapes, sizes and races, moving across the floor in lines. Throwing ourselves at the beat. It was bliss. That was the first time I fell in love with myself.

How could I recapture that feeling, that awe in what I could do and joy in spending time with myself?

I took up running about a year ago. When I say running I mean jogging. My stubby 5 foot, jiggly frame hasn't hit its stride yet but the great thing is my mind doesn't care. In my head I am an antelope. I AM Sanya Richards-Ross. And I feel like I'm flying at less than one mile per hour. So, the running helped to reclaim some of my womanhood.

Every now and then I take myself on a date. I wake up in the morning, check out what's happening for free in the city and then decide if I want to go. It's incredibly liberating. Some days I pick a cafe, get a cup of coffee and a pastry, and settle in with a good book. Other days I window shop or head to a bookstore and discover something new.

In high school, I developed a love for using my hands to make things. I had a ceramics teacher named Ms. Early. (Teachers out there, don't ever take your jobs for granted. You never know how you've changed a life, inspired a child.) She wore long peasant skirts and clay streaked blouses and her hair was always in a sloppy bun on top of her head. And I loved her. She taught me how to turn a lump of clay into a masterpiece. She taught me how to use my hands to create something out of nothing. And now because of Ms. Early, I make art. It will probably never hang in a gallery but I made it and that's enough.

I had another life as a medical writer/editor. I majored in Journalism and started doing medical editing and writing straight out of college. It was my very first job. My team and I worked with pharmaceutical companies to develop publication plans, scientific meetings, posters. My specialties were osteoporosis, respiratory medicine and an online program on restless legs syndrome (yes, that's a real thing).

The great thing about this job was that I got to travel! I never left the US but I had never been anywhere up until that job so it was exciting. After attending hours long symposia and staring at scientific posters until my eyes were about to bleed, I took myself to the movies and out to dinner. In Miami Beach, San Francisco, Philadelphia I made it a point to do something for me. I can still remember watching the movie Catch and Release in a theater in San Francisco, crying and laughing and having the time of my life.

Somewhere along the way I lost the sense that I was important. I still want to create, I still want to have great cups of coffee, I still want to take a dance class just because. I'm writing this all down to encourage my self to continue on the quest to fall in love with myself and encourage you to take up the quest alongside me.

What has made you feel more fully yourself ? What has helped to reaffirm your womanhood?

The Dreaded Two Week Wait

Source: cb2.com
I'm 7dpo today, a smidge over the halfway point of the two week wait aka two weeks of despair and/or hope.

This morning I stayed in the bed past my alarm at 9am. My bed has become my safe place. When I'm asleep I don't have to think about whether or not I'm pregnant. I can keep that running, torturous dialogue at bay as long as I stay under the covers.

I'm having a few symptoms but after past disappointments, I no longer trust my body and its sensations. This makes me very sad because it means my various twinges, steamy dreams, odd pains, hunger and bloating could just be normal premenstrual stuff and not the precursor for the child I desperately want.

El Hubster and I are finally getting away to Canada for a few days so at least I'll have a relaxing trip as a distraction. I think the mountain air and being outside and eating fatty French food will do me good.

The truth is I've never been very good at living in the moment. The TTC process is ALL about living in the moment...taking each day as it comes. It's something I've struggled with since I was a child. I always felt I had to be one step ahead of danger and/or disappointment because I never knew what the day would bring...whether or not my needs would be met.

You would think after years of therapy I'd have overcome this obstacle but getting to a place where I can find comfort in unpredictability is a slow climb at best. El Hubster ONLY lives in the moment so I guess that's another reason why we're a good match.

I visited my regular doctor the other day and I told the assistant that I was in my two week wait...she had no idea what I was talking about and that annoyed me. I had to explain it to her and then she asked me if I wanted to take a pregnancy test. I declined because it's way too soon to tell and I really would just be setting myself up to feel bad.

Oh Lord, I'm frustrated and exasperated. Only YOU can do this! I've done everything on my end this month, now it's time for you to SHOW UP and SHOW OUT.

Exhale!

Had a visit with SuperDoc today. El Hubster wasn't able to come with me this time and I missed him terribly. Did I mention that every time I go to see the RE it rains...? What is that about? I like to think of it as good luck because isn't it good luck when it rains on your wedding day? Same concept, right?

Anywho, I packed my kindle with my latest addiction, Game of Thrones, and prepared for the long ass bus ride up there (I won't have to take the bus in the future because El Hubster's father has gifted us with his old one!! We are now wheeled people!) I got there early and had some time to have a little breakfast. I was anxious, hoping there wasn't another cyst hiding in my uterus...keeping me from my dream.

I finally get in the exam room and I'm sitting there naked from the waist down but feeling even more naked emotionally. By the time SuperDoc enters the room, my hands are shaking. SuperDoc gets right down to business. She knows why I'm here. Minutes later I'm given the ALL CLEAR! No cysts on either ovary.  I said my thanks, put on my undies, had some blood drawn and walked out into the rain.

This girl is ready to pop some Clomid!!

A Time For Everything

Last night I was standing in the kitchen simultaneously cooking dinner and washing the dishes. I had been sitting on our couch for most of the day reading and watching television, thinking about my negative pregnancy tests. I took three of them this past week. I told myself that I wasn't really trying but aren't we always trying? I started to play the blame game with myself. If you had eaten better....if you had lost more weight....if you hadn't waited until you were 30...it went on and on and on.

When I start to get like this the only help is distraction, getting busy, using my hands. It's why I'm a dynamo at cleaning a house or doing a home improvement project. I took myself out of the house yesterday to do some laundry. What a difference it made to get out of the house for a little while. I watched an episode of a baby story with an African American couple where the mother had a stillborn and another miscarriage before taking a daughter home. I thought to myself, "geez, I couldn't deal with that...wonder how she did that?" Her husband was super supportive. This woman was on bed rest for most of her pregnancy. He put together the nursery and stocked it. When it came time for her scheduled c-section you could see the fear in his eyes. I knew exactly what he was feeling...something could still go wrong, this is too good to be true.

I fight fear and doubt every day. Sometimes I don't succeed and end up a sniveling mess over the kitchen sink crying big, heaving, ugly tears. I don't even know what specifically set me off...was it the episode I watched? was it the children running around in the laundromat? was it the announcement that my good friend's baby is a boy? It was all of these things. A culmination of sorrows.

My husband walked through the door to find me a mess, crying in the kitchen. I had thrown myself into cooking lasagna and cleaning...because I wanted to feel like a woman. It was strange because I'm definitely not a "traditional" woman in the sense that I applaud working women but I do value the importance of staying home if you can. I know these feelings of unworthiness come from my own lack of mothering. The scars are deep and painful and they spur me on to have my own children, re-write the wrongs and do it better.

When I finally calmed myself down, we had a good dinner, had  a great talk about where we are right now. I started to feel grateful  for all the blessings I do have instead of the ones I haven't received yet. El Hubster's favorite phrase for me is "We're on track, gal!" It speaks to my type A personality's need to be working toward a goal.

I learned that I'm gonna have really shitty days and I shouldn't beat myself up for it
I learned that I am capable of feeling joy
I learned that I am blessed to have such a support at home
I learned that I am blessed to be able to stay at home during this time

I took comfort from Ecclesiastes 3:

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Nesting

source: http://gallery.usgs.gov
I spent the entire morning in nesting mode! This is funny because I am NOT pregnant..yet. In March, it'll be 3 months since my myomectomy and I'm hoping to get the all clear so the hubster and I can start TTC again. I'll admit that I'm a little terrified of going through TTC for the third time. It's never easy. All of your hopes and expectations are magnified times ten...billion.

Spent an hour on Pinterest adding to my baby board and thinking about my scheduled c-section. I got it into my head that I should have a VBAC and then changed my mind after reading about uterine rupture. I'm already a high risk pregnancy because: a) I'm at least 15 pounds overweight, b) there's a history of pre-term birth in my family, c) I've had previous abdominal surgery and d) I've got PCOS. Do I want to sacrifice being able to have two natural born children because I think I deserve a VBAC? The answer is no. I may change my mind on this one. I realize it's easy for me to say what I want and don't want with no baby in my belly.

Been thinking about all the ways I can get ready for TTC again. I really need to start taking my prenatal vitamins consistently. I ordered these from Amazon and have been taking them since they arrived two days ago, along with the metformin for my PCOS and thyroxine for my hypothyroidism. I really hate that I'm taking all these medications. I'll have to find a way to get some natural alternatives the next time around...

They're alright so far. According to reviews they're supposed to be easy to take during that crucial morning sickness time. I already know that I'm gonna be one of those moms who wants to be "extra" in everything. I've been a type A personality for as long as I can remember and I don't expect that to change with motherhood.

Hubster and I currently live in a one bedroom apartment and plan to keep living in one up until our baby can walk. Two bedroom apartments in the Bronx can start at $1200 and we want to stay within our means for as long as possible. I'm not one of those mom-to-be's who wants or needs a large nursery. I'm quite content to have baby with the hubster and I in our bedroom . Been thinking about how I can accomplish this but luckily the one bedrooms I've seen are pretty spacious up here. We'll probably just tuck baby in a corner of the bedroom a la...

We already have furniture to serve as changing table/storage. All it needs is a comfy changing pad and it's set! Hubster comes from a family with three siblings and they all shared a one bedroom apartment for years in Washington Heights! I know we'll be blessed enough to make room.

I'm going back and forth on whether or not I want to find out the baby's sex. I really do think it's one of those surprises that can't be topped but I worry about not having the proper things in place for a girl or a boy color-wise. I'm really fixated on a coral colored accessories for a little girl and blue for a boy...sigh. How about I revisit this when I'm ACTUALLY pregnant?

In the meantime, I'm enjoying all the things I likely won't be able to once baby's on board: red wine, good food, late mornings, late nights, movies out with the hubster and solitude. Hubster and I have decided to take a small trip up to Canada in April just to take our minds off TTC, go hiking and spend some quality time together. I can't put into words how much I'm looking forward to this. It'll be such a great change to be out and about and not in the house. Here's where we're staying!

The hubster and I are HUGE nature lovers and we seem to have an obsession with Canada... the vastness, the beauty, the people..

Whew...this is turning into a monster post...bye bye for now!
